A PERSONAL NOTE FROM DR. RUIZ
Hello all! My name is Julio
Ruiz and while I was born in Michigan, I’ve been happy to make various parts of
Texas my home for the past 20+ years. For undergrad, I attended The University of
Texas Rio Grande Valley in Edinburg and my family home is in Weslaco, Texas. For
medical school, I attended Baylor College of Medicine in Houston. I’ve been glad
to stay in Texas and close to my family to be able to visit them, and for
them to be able to visit me!
Since I started
medical school, I thought I was going to practice family medicine for the ability to
see something new every day and to be able to develop a broad base of knowledge
for my patients. I enjoy being a generalist and having a little knowledge about
everything. Although Pedi briefly managed to sway me, I decided that I needed
the variety of the adults along with the kids. I wanted to be able to see
everyone in the family and not have anyone “age out” of my clinics. UTMB was a
great opportunity for me to be able to see all kinds of people and get that
varied training I was looking for.
As
for what I do outside of medicine, I tend to play Dungeons and Dragons with my
friends, knit for myself and my friends (go COVID hobbies!) play video games,
watch movies, and read a lot of fantasy and sci-fi books!
