About UTMB
UTMB opened in 1891 as the nation’s first public medical school and hospital under unified leadership—already a pioneer. What began as one hospital and medical school building in Galveston is now a major academic health sciences center of global influence; a world-renowned research enterprise; and a growing, comprehensive health system with hospitals on four campuses and a network of clinics. UTMB has a $4.9 billion annual statewide economic impact, in terms of business volume, personal income and durable goods purchases. More than 46,000 jobs in Texas are directly or indirectly attributed to UTMB.

UTMB Health is a $2.2 billion health science center comprised of five hospitals, an extensive network of outpatient clinics, and Schools of Medicine, Nursing, Health Professions, Public and Population Health, as well as a Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, three institutes and over 10 exceptional research centers.  UTMB has a long and remarkable history of advancing health sciences education, research, and patient care. It was the first academic health center in Texas and is home to the state’s first schools of medicine, nursing, and allied health sciences. UTMB is also home to the Galveston National Laboratory, one of only two laboratories conducting research on a university campus at the BSL-4 level in the U.S. Overall research funding has increased 20% over the past five years to $132 million and UTMB ranks 54th nationally in NIH funding among medical schools. UTMB also ranks as a five-star hospital by Vizient, for superior performance in providing high quality care.

About the Department of Family Medicine

The UTMB Department of Family Medicine was founded as an independent department in 1971 but existed prior to that as a division of the Department of Preventive Medicine and Population Health. Family Medicine faculty provide medical care to Galveston County residents through its three clinics, located on the UTMB Galveston campus, on the western end of Galveston Island, and in Dickinson, Texas, and through its inpatient service at the new Jennie Sealy Hospital in Galveston, Texas. Additional services are rendered at the Gulf Health Care Center nursing home and the Galveston County Health District's Coastal Health & Wellness. At present the Department includes programs in medical student education, residency, faculty development, and research.

Where is Galveston Island located?
Galveston is a barrier island on the Texas Gulf Coast in the United States, about 50 miles (80.5 km) southeast of the metroplex of the most populated city in the US,  Houston. The entire island, with the exception of Jamaica Beach, is within the city limits of the City of Galveston in Galveston County.

The island is about 27 miles long and no more than 3 miles wide at its widest point. The island is oriented northeast-southwest, with the Gulf of Mexico on the east and south, West Bay on the west, and Galveston Bay on the north. The island's main access point from the mainland is Interstate Highway 45 which crosses the Galveston Causeway that crosses West Bay on the northeast side of the island.

The far north end of the island is separated from the Bolivar Peninsula by Galveston Harbor, the entrance to Galveston Bay and the Houston Ship Channel. Ferry service is available between Galveston Island and the Bolivar Peninsula. The southern end of the island is separated from the mainland by San Luis Pass. The San Luis Pass-Vacek Toll Bridge connects the San Luis Pass Road on Galveston Island with the Bluewater Highway that leads south into the town of Surfside Beach.

Do you recommend living on or off the island?
That answer is different for every person.  Do you want to live in a historic resort town where there is always something to do and every home has a story and is unique? Do you want to live in a small tight-knit community with traditional homes and neighbors? Do you want to live closer to a metroplex and all that it has to offer?  Or do you want to be secluded on acreage and raise goats?  Each person's needs are different and Galveston County has it all.  We encourage you to research the areas from South Houston to Galveston, they are all very different.  Another determining factor of island life, or not, is where your primary clinic location will be. Two of our clinics and our hospital services are located on Galveston Island and the third clinic is located in Dickinson.

With Houston only 60 minutes* away from Galveston Island the rich culture and activities of Houston are close enough to enjoy or far enough away to escape big city life.

*depends on point of origin, destination and traffic.  60 minutes is average transportation time from campus to downtown Houston.

What are my housing options?
The main cities along the I-45 corridor, between South Houston and Galveston are all within acceptable driving distance to any of our clinics and to the main campus on Galveston Island.  In order of distance to campus (closest to farthest: Galveston Island, Bayou Vista,  Hitchcock, La Marque, Texas City, Dickinson, League City, Webster, and Friendswood).  We advise that you research each community and their Chamber of Commerce data related to population, average income, crime, housing and school rankings.

What is the weather like?
Galveston has sub-tropical temperate weather year-round, averaging 57 degrees in the winter and 81 degrees in the summer.

What is hurricane season like?
While there are no guarantees with mother nature, tropical storms and hurricanes do happen along the Gulf Coast. The University and our department have a comprehensive emergency preparedness plan to keep our operations, and our families, safe should a hurricane head our direction.  Hurricane season is June 1- November 30 every year.

What are other weather related occurrences in the area?  Just like anywhere in the world, there are a number of weather emergencies that can occur in our area  (e.g. freezing temperatures, tornadoes and water spouts, flooding, power outages, high winds (not hurricane related), and extreme heat).

How are the school systems rated?
There are seven main districts within our region offering recognized achievement in both public and private education. Here are the top 5

  1. Friendswood Independent School District
  2. Dickinson Independent School District
  3. Odyssey Academy
  4. Galveston Independent School District
  5. Hitchcock Independent School District

In 2022, a bond was passed for "Build a Better GISD".  Currently Ball High School is being rebuilt and expanded, upgrades are also being made to Central, Weis and Austin Middle Schools, and technology infrastructure and instructional technology is being upgraded district wide.
