Changes in Family Medicine Residency Program Leadership

The UTMB Health Department of Family Medicine is proud to announce that Tricia Elliott, MD has accepted the position of Vice President for Academic Affairs, Designated Institutional Officer, and Chief Academic Officer with the the JPS Health Network in Forth Worth, Texas. In this position Dr. Elliott will oversee all undergraduate, graduate, and continuing medical education, including assisting with research for the institution.

While we are very sad that Dr. Elliott will be leaving her current position as Director of the UTMB Health Family Medicine Residency Program, we are happy for her and wish her very well in her new position.

We are also happy to announce that Jamal Islam, MD has accepted the position of Director of the UTMB Health Family Medicine Residency Program, effective January 1, 2017.

Dr. Islam is an Associate Professor and has served as Associate Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program since August 2015. He was a member of the UTMB Health faculty from 1998 to 2008. After leaving UTMB Health, he served as Associate Professor, Director of Research, Regional Assistant Dean of Research, and Regional Vice-Chair for the Department of Family Medicine at Texas Tech University Health Science Center, Permian Basin until 2014.

In 2014 Dr. Islam returned to UTMB Health to join the Department of Family Medicine and focus on education and patient care. He is one of the original team of faculty involved in the Student Continuity of Practice Experience (SCOPE) project, which partners medical students with a primary care family member to expose students to long-term patient/provider partnerships and the rewards of primary care practice. He is also the UTMB Health primary investigator for a project exploring ways to improve delivery of primary care to cancer survivors, in cooperation with the M.D. Anderson Cancer Center. He serves on the Texas Academy of Family Physicians' Commission on Public Health, Research, and Clinical Affairs, as well as the Commission on Health Care Services and Managed Care.

Dr. Islam is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine, and practices at the Family Medicine Clinic – Island East, located in the Primary Care Pavilion.
