Resident Research Day 2015

Jun 8, 2015, 15:31 PM by Julia Essex

On May 21st the Family Medicine Residents participated in the Annual Family Medicine Research Day showcasing the research activities of their residents and interns.  This research day is coordinated by the Family Medicine research faculty, Susan Weller, PhD, Angela Shepherd, MD, Alvah Cass, MD, SM and Bret Howrey, PhD as well as staff members Alma Salazar, Cassi Boatwright and Jennie Gounah

Beginning in the fall, interns develop a case report and present their finding in the form of a poster. There were 5 intern posters displayed. Poster Topics and participants are listed below.

The program year 2 (PGY2) residents participated in a continuous quality improvement (CQI) project.  This year's topic was Asthma and was presented by Rebecca Burke, MD, Ramon De La Torre, MD, and Nida Sajan, MS, DO.

Also beginning in the fall, the PGY3 residents participate in a two-week research course based on the Help Desk Answer (HDA) research curriculum from the Family Physicians Inquiries Network (FPIN). Upon completion of the educational modules, residents are grouped into research teams and assigned a help desk question.  The topics are pulled from clinical questions submitted to FPIN.  The teams research their topic, grade the evidence, and write up their findings as a help desk answer which is submitted to Evidence-Based Practice for peer review and publication.  The teams then present their findings at resident research day as a podium presentation and poster.

This year's reports are as follows:
Report 1: Are alpha-blockers effective therapy for ureteral stones? Presented by Peter Beshara, MD, Annie Jan, MD and Osama Mohamed, MD.
