On Thursday May 1st, 2014 the PGY1 UTMB Health Department of Family Medicine Residents took part in the second annual SIM Man Hospital Service Skills Building Workshop.  Faculty, third-year residents and nursing staff led the first-year residents through 5 different night float scenarios utilizing UTMB Health’s advanced simulation center.  Each resident worked their way through patient cases to accurately diagnose, treat and stabilize their patients.  Faculty played the part of the patient in "Wizard of Oz" fashion while third-year residents assisted the nurses as physician support.

While this workshop was used to assess the first-year residents' ability to handle different patient scenarios, accurately diagnose their condition and accurately react to the different situations, this simulation day was also a great evaluation tool for each resident's skill level and for how the program itself is teaching the residents.

Dr. Juliet McKee was the faculty lead for this workshop.  Other faculty members included Alvah Cass, MD SM; Jennifer Raley, MD; Saleh Elsaid, MD; and Myers Hurt, MD.  Chief Resident Laura Porterfield, MD and PGY3 Hammad Qureshi, MD were the third-year residents on hand and we would also like to acknowledge the staff at the Nursing SIM Center.
