pantherA beautiful spring morning on Saturday, April 12th, 2014, brought walkers and runners out to participate in the First Annual Mainland Preparatory Academy Panther Express 1K and 5K Family Fun Run.  This fun run was sponsored by the Mainland Preparatory Academy’s Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), UTMB Health’s Charles H. and Mary Campbell Lectureship Family Medicine Childhood Wellness Project and College of the Mainland.

All proceeds from the event benefited the Mainland Preparatory Academy and each participant received a commemorative fun run t-shirt. There was also a pancake breakfast provided by The Egg and I restaurant.

UTMB Health's Department Family Medicine social worker, Leah Fanuiel, LMSW and faculty physician, Juliet McKee, MD were instrumental in organizing this event with Mainland Prep's PTO.

A huge "thank you" goes out to everyone who supported this amazing event.  Special thanks goes to Dr. Barbara Thompson who provided a generous sponsorship donation as well as donations from Drs. Tricia Elliott, Hanan Hussein, Cassandra Arceneaux, Tuere Coulter and Juliet McKee.  Family Medicine residents, Drs. Madiha Khan and Preet Mangat came out and volunteered to provide First Aid support for the event.  Additionally, our Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) students, Nathaniel De La Cruz and Sherry Igbinigie, both volunteered and ran the 5K.

Additional behind-the-scenes thank you's go out to UTMB Family Medicine support staffers Cassi Boatwright, who designed the Panther Express logo and created the marketing materials for the event, and Vicky Cervantes, who created the website for registration and more information.

It was a great day and the Mainland Prep PTO is already planning for next year!
