Four groups including Department of Family Medicine faculty presented their work at the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM) Annual Conference in Seattle, Washington on April 25-29, 2012.
Cassandra Arceneaux, MD, MPH and Leah Fanuiel, MSW presented their poster entitled "Creating a Community Advocacy Group in a Rural Underserved Area".
Tricia Elliott, MD, Juanita Caskey, MA, and Linda Hubbell along with the Steve Shelton, PA, Assistant Vice President for Community Outreach Programs at UTMB Health and Jorge Duchicela, MD, Robert Youens, MD, and Olga Duchicela, MD of the Department of Family Medicine Integrated Rural Training Track conducted their work-in-progress presentation entitled "Deep in the Heart of Texas: Development of an Integrated Rural Training Track".
Victor Sierpina, MD, along with faculty members from University of Arizona, Beth Israel Residency Program in New York, NY, and Maine Dartmouth Family Medicine Residency in Augusta, ME, conducted a lecture discussion on "Creating a Learning Community Across Residencies:The Success of the Integrative Medicine in Residency Program".
Catalina Triana, MD and Michael Olson, PhD led a scholarly activity roundtable on "Facilitating Self-management and Empowerment in Diabetes: A Taste of Motivational Interviewing".
In addition to leading the roundtable, Dr. Triana began her third year as a co-leader of STFM's Group on Family and Behavioral Health. In 2012-2013 she will serve as senior co-chair for the group, which includes more than 400 members. She also served as a small group mentor for the STFM Behavioral and Family Systems Educator Fellowship, co-mentoring four fellows who presented posters at the conference.
