The UTMB Health Department of Family Medicine is pleased to announce the recipients of the 2014 Weldon G. Kolb, MD Scholarship: Carah Howe (MS4), Roxanne Radi (MS4), Alyssa Shell (MS3), and Rebecca Tiemann (MS4). Kolb scholarship recipients are outstanding medical students who plan to go on to family medicine residencies or to practice family medicine.

A beautiful spring morning on Saturday, April 12th, 2014, brought walkers and runners out to participate in the First Annual Mainland Preparatory Academy Panther Express 1K and 5K Family Fun Run. This fun run was sponsored by the Mainland Preparatory Academy’s Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), UTMB Health’s Charles H. and Mary Campbell Lectureship Family Medicine Childhood Wellness Project and College of the Mainland.

On April 3, 2014 the UTMB Health Family Medicine Interest Group hosted their 3rd annual suture workshop, known as the "PCP at the PCP Lite", at the Primary Care Pavilion. The event, sponsored by the Department of Family Medicine's Medical Student Education Program, was attended by over 30 medical students who learned suturing (stitching and knot tying) techniques and practiced under the supervision of Family Medicine Physicians and Residents.

Two Family Medicine residents, Quratulanne "Annie" Jan, MD and Soraira Pacheco, DO, were elected to positions for 2014-2015 with the Texas Academy of Family Physicians (TAFP). The elections took place during the resident meetings at the 2014 TAFP Interim Session, attended by family medicine residents from across the state. Dr. Pacheco was elected to be resident secretary, while Dr. Jan was elected to be the alternate resident delegate to the annual session of the TAFP.

The 2014 Match is complete and the UTMB Health Department of Family Medicine is pleased to welcome our incoming resident Class of 2017.

The UTMB Health Department of Family Medicine hosted Joshua Freeman, MD on March 6, 2014. Dr. Freeman presented a Grand Rounds lecture entitled "Social Justice, Health, and Health Care in the US".

The UTMB Health Department of Family Medicine is pleased to present David P. Rakel, MD as he gives a Grand Rounds lecture entitled "The Clinician Effect: How You Trump Pills" on February 27, 2014 from 5:30-7:30pm.

UTMB Health Family Medicine Residency Rural Training Track faculty member, Dr. Jorge Duchicela is the recipient of the prestigious 2013 TRHA Annual Rural Health Academic Preceptor Award for the State of Texas.

The UTMB Health Department of Family Medicine has published in 2012-2013 Annual Report. The report summarizes the activities of the faculty, staff, and residents of the department from September 1, 2012 to August 31, 2013.

UTMB Health's chapter of the American Medical Student Association (AMSA) has been keeping up a busy schedule this fall. This fall they co-hosted the annual Breakfast with the American Medical Women's Association (AMWA) before the first year medical students took their Gross Anatomy & Radiology (GAR) midterm exam. UTMB Health AMSA members joined in a AMSA-sponsored panel at the University of Houston for college students considering attending medical school.

Barbara L. Thompson, MD, professor and chair of the Department of Family Medicine, is being honored in Texas Super Doctors. A listing of Texas' Super Doctors will be featured in the December 2013 issue of Texas Monthly. This is the fifth time Dr. Thompson has been honored in this listing.

The UTMB Health Department of Family Medicine and the Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) hosted the Third Annual Primary Care Procedures Workshop for medical students on October 10, 2013 at the Primary Care Pavilion on the second floor from 5:30 pm - 7:30 pm.

During the morning of Friday, September 6, 2013, UTMB Health Integrated Rural Training Track Residents, Dr. Estela Mota-Garcia (Program Year 3) and Dr. Erick F. Alvarez (Program Year 2) represented UTMB and the Youens & Duchicela Clinic of Weimar by having a booth at the Flatonia Health Fair in Flatonia, Texas.

The UTMB Health chapter of the American Medical Student Association kicked off its 2013-2014 academic year with its first meeting of the year on August 26th in the Old Red Amphitheater.

During the 83rd regular session of the Texas Legislature Dr Jorge Duchicela and UTMB Health Family Medicine residents, Dr. Estela Mota-Garcia and Dr. Evan Underwood represented the TAFP as Doctor of the Day on two occasions.
