The UTMB Health Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) has rescheduled their annual residency fair to take place on Wednesday, September 13, 2017 at 5:30pm in Jennie Sealy Hospital 2.506.

The UTMB Health Department of Family Medicine is pleased to share that as of 7 a.m. on Friday, September 1, the institution has declared an end to the emergency status related to Hurricane Harvey. Academic offices and clinics have opened, and will operate their normal business hours.

UTMB Health continues to be operating at emergency status as of Monday, August 28. Jennie Sealy Hospital in Galveston, League City Campus Hospital in League City, and Angleton-Danbury Hospital in Angleton continue to be open, with emergency departments available to the community. One of the Department of Family Medicine's clinics, Family Medicine Clinic – Island West, is open today, Monday, August 28.

The Texas Academy of Family Physicians (TAFP) announced the 2017 winners of its Texas FMIG Program of Excellence Award in August 2017. The UTMB Health Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) was awarded first place.

On Saturday May 20, 2017, the University of Texas Medical Branch Department of Family Medicine hosted the First Annual Regional Family Medicine Residency Research Symposium. The symposium showcased the research activities of family medicine residents and fellows from programs in the Galveston-Houston metro area.

The UTMB Health Department of Family Medicine is now accepting applications for the 2016-2017 Weldon G. Kolb, MD Scholarship. The scholarship is awarded to 3rd and 4th year medical student(s) at UTMB Health who meet high academic standards and express and interest in pursuing a career in family medicine. Past recipients have gone on to family medicine residencies or to practice family medicine.

R. Russell Thomas Jr., DO, MPH presented a lecture on December 1, 2016 as part of the UTMB Health Department of Family Medicine's Grand Rounds. Dr. Thomas presented "Country Medicine Revisited: The Evolution of Rural Medicine Over the Past 30 Years" and shared his thoughts and experiences as a small-town primary care physician.
