The UTMB Health Family Medicine Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) secured a 5th year-in-a-row AAFP Program of Excellence Award and were acknowledged at the AAFP National Conference in Kansas City on July 27-29, 2023.

The UTMB Health Family Medicine Residency Program was in attendance at the 2023 American Academy of Family Physicians National Conference in Kansas City for the first time since 2019 as a result of COVID-19.

On Thursday, February 16th, 2023 the UTMB Health Department of Family Medicine hosted the 2nd Annual Women's Health Workshop, a collaboration between the Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) and the Obstetrics Gynecology Student Society (OGSS).

Dr. Shannon Guillot-Wright is Vice Chair of Research and Health Policy in the Department of Family Medicine, and Health Policy Research Director at the Center for Violence Prevention was recently awarded a $660,000 grant from the U.S. Centers for Disease Control funding a 5yr research project to address health disparities for commercial fishermen and to bring medical professionals to the fishing docks to provide primary care services.

Thanks to UTMB Health Family Medicine Research Federal Work Study Student, Leonard Wang, 50 flu/winter kits for Vietnamese fishermen will be distributed at the Docside Clinic this week and in the weeks to come.

Members of the UTMB Health Latino Medical Student Association and the Family Medicine Interest Group were recently on hand, at La Michoacán on Broadway, to provide free flu immunizations to the Galveston community.

We wish to welcome Tibor Kisel to the Family of Family Medicine. Tibor is a second year Master of Public Health (MPH) student on the Biostatistics track from the School of Public and Population Health. She will be assisting Dr. Campbell in his research efforts, focusing on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion in academic medicine.

We are proud to announce rising third year resident and incoming co-chief, Dr. Haris Vakil was recently appointed as an officer serving as Resident Liaison of the Resident and Student Leader Forum for the Texas Academy of Family Physicians (TAFP).

Shannon Guillot-Wright, PhD joins UTMB Health's Department of Family Medicine as Assistant Professor and Vice Chair of Research and Health Policy in the Department of Family Medicine. She will also serve as faculty in UTMB’s Center for Violence Prevention.

On Friday, December 10th a ribbon cutting ceremony was held of the newly planted Island Farmacy. The Farmacy is a collaboration of the doctors of the UTMB Health Family Medicine Clinic - Island West, UTMB Health's SIGHT student organization and Seeding Galveston, a non-profit urban farm project.
