    The Department of Family Medicine in conjunction with support from the W.D. & Laura Nicholson Family Chair in Integrative Medicine Endowment and the Charles H. and Mary Campbell Integrative Medicine Funding presented Dr. Frenkel on Thursday, October 23, 2014 for three great lectures on the role of the primary care doctor for cancer patients and the importance of food in caring for cancer patients.

    Tricia Elliott, MD was quoted in a July 2014 article in the STFM News in support of the new Institute of Medicine's Graduate Medical Education that Meets the Nation's Health Needs. Dr. Elliott currently serves as the chair of the Academic Family Medicine Advocacy Committee and is a strong advocate for academic family medicine.

  • Residents Provide Sports Physicals

    Each year, UTMB Health offers health screening to local children and teens in preparation for summer activities and school sports. In 2014, 12 family medicine residents worked side-by-side with four faculty members to provide these low-cost services at UTMB Health's annual Student Sports Physicals event, held June 21, 2014 at the Specialty Care Center at Victory Lakes.

    On Thursday May 1st the PGY1 UTMB Health Department of Family Medicine Residents took part in the second annual SIM Man Hospital Service Skills Building Workshop. Faculty, third-year residents and nursing staff led the first-year residents through 5 different night float scenarios utilizing UTMB Health’s advanced simulation center.

Kolb, MD Scholarship: Carah Howe (MS4), Roxanne Radi (MS4), Alyssa Shell (MS3), and Rebecca Tiemann (MS4). Kolb scholarship recipients are outstanding medical students who plan to go on to family medicine residencies or to practice family medicine.

    A beautiful spring morning on Saturday, April 12th, 2014, brought walkers and runners out to participate in the First Annual Mainland Preparatory Academy Panther Express 1K and 5K Family Fun Run. This fun run was sponsored by the Mainland Preparatory Academy’s Parent Teacher Organization (PTO), UTMB Health’s Charles H. and Mary Campbell Lectureship Family Medicine Childhood Wellness Project and College of the Mainland.

  • UTMB Future Doctors Learn How to Suture

    On April 3, 2014 the UTMB Health Family Medicine Interest Group hosted their 3rd annual suture workshop, known as the "PCP at the PCP Lite", at the Primary Care Pavilion. The event, sponsored by the Department of Family Medicine's Medical Student Education Program, was attended by over 30 medical students who learned suturing (stitching and knot tying) techniques and practiced under the supervision of Family Medicine Physicians and Residents.

  • Family Medicine Residents Elected to Positions with TAFP

    Two Family Medicine residents, Quratulanne "Annie" Jan, MD and Soraira Pacheco, DO, were elected to positions for 2014-2015 with the Texas Academy of Family Physicians (TAFP). The elections took place during the resident meetings at the 2014 TAFP Interim Session, attended by family medicine residents from across the state. Dr. Pacheco was elected to be resident secretary, while Dr. Jan was elected to be the alternate resident delegate to the annual session of the TAFP.
