Family Medicine Hosts Graves T. Owen, MD for May Grand Rounds

The UTMB Health Department of Family Medicine is pleased to announce that Graves T. Owen, MD will be presenting a Family Medicine Grand Rounds on June 1, 2017. Dr. Owen will present a lecture entitled "Pain Management 101".  This lecture will be proudly sponsored by the Fellow of the John P. McGovern Centennial Chair in Family Medicine.

Dr. Owen graduated with honors from Southwest Texas State University in San Marcos, Texas where he earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Chemistry. He earned a medical degree from the University of Texas Medical School in Houston and completed an internship in Internal Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center (Also located in Houston). Dr. Owen also completed residency training in Anesthesiology at the University of Texas Health Science Center.

 
Dr. Owen will define pain and suffering, chronic pain vs. chronic pain syndrome. He will give an understanding of what drives disability perception, the incidence of psycho-social co-morbidities and the their effect on pain and disability perception. He will also help us to understand core concepts that define the standard of care, non-drug options in treating chronic and acute pain. 
He also will talk about the the current opioid overdose pandemic and drivers of the pandemic and give a brief overview of opioids including lack efficacy, risk factors for addiction and aberrant use of opioids, incidence of addiction in chronic pain population, and adverse side effects form opioids.
