July Grand Rounds: Alicia Monroe, MD

Alicia Monroe, MDUTMB Health's Department of Family Medicine is pleased to host Alicia Monroe, MD, Senior Dean of Education and Senior Vice President of Academic Affairs and Faculty Development at Baylor College of Medicine as guest lecturer for Grand Rounds on July 10, 2014.  Dr. Monroe will also present a resident didactic lecture earlier that day.  The topics of both lectures and additional details are pending.  Please check back at the end of June for more details.

Dr. Monroe was appointed as Senior Dean of Education and Senior Vice President, Academic Affairs and Faculty Development at Baylor College of Medicine (BCM) in Houston, Texas in February 2014.  At BCM, Dr. Monroe oversees the Medical School, the Graduate School of Biomedical Sciences, the School of Allied Health Sciences, and the National School of Tropical Medicine. In addition she has oversight for Faculty Development, Professionalism, Diversity, and GME programs across BCM and its affiliated teaching hospitals. She also serves as a member of the BCM Academic Council.

She formerly served as the Chief Academic Officer, Vice Dean for Educational Affairs and Professor of Family Medicine at the Morsani College of Medicine (MCOM), University of South Florida, Tampa, FL.  At USF MCOM, Dr. Monroe provided oversight for the undergraduate medical education programs, the physical therapy program and the masters programs in graduate studies. She developed a new medical education program in partnership with Lehigh Valley Health Network that integrates curriculum and training in emotional intelligence, leadership, values-based patient-centered care, quality and safety and interprofessional team-based care. She led a professionalism initiative at MCOM that engaged senior leaders, faculty, residents and students. Dr. Monroe’s scholarly interests include physician-patient communication, cross-cultural communication, leadership training and mentoring students and faculty. 

Prior to coming to USF MCOM, Dr. Monroe was on the faculty of the Alpert Medical School at Brown University where she served as the Associate Dean for Minority Affairs and professor of family medicine. Dr. Monroe earned her MD degree from Indiana University School of Medicine, and completed an internship in psychiatry at Georgetown University Medical Center in Washington, DC, and a residency in family medicine at Methodist Hospital in Indianapolis, IN. Early in her career, Dr. Monroe was involved in leadership roles in graduate medical education. She has received numerous teaching and mentoring awards. She is a member and past president of the Association for the Behavioral Sciences and Medical Education, a national organization of medical educators dedicated to creatively and innovatively applying social and behavioral science knowledge to medical education.  She served on the Association for American Medical Colleges (AAMC) Behavioral and Social Sciences Expert Panel and was a contributor to the Behavioral and Social Sciences Foundations for Future Physicians.  Dr. Monroe was also a member of the AAMC MR5 Committee, the group convened to undertake the fifth review of the medical college admissions test and recommend changes for a new version of the exam to be implemented in 2015. She currently serves as the chair of the AAMC Advisory Committee on Holistic Review.  She completed the Executive Leadership in Academic Medicine (ELAM) Program in 2007. ELAM is a nationally recognized program of the Institute for Women's Health and Leadership at Drexel University College of Medicine, Philadelphia, PA.
