Dr. Azhar joined UTMB Health’s Department of Family Medicine & Community Health in 1993. He currently serves as a Professor.
Dr. Azhar earned a Bachelor of Medicine, Bachelor of Surgery (MBBS) from Osmania Medical College in Hyderabad, India. He then completed post-graduate training in general medicine and urology in Hyderabad, India, as well as a residency in ophthalmology at the Medical College in Aurangabad, India. He further completed a residency in ophthalmology at the teaching hospitals of Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland where he was awarded a Fellow of the Royal College of Surgeons in Ireland (FRCSI), a diploma in ophthalmology, and membership in the College of Ophthalmology in London.
Dr. Azhar also completed a fellowship in neuro-ophthalmology at the University of Texas Health Science Center in Houston, Texas, and a residency at the UTMB Health Family Medicine Residency Program. He also earned an Master of Business Administration for Physicians (MBA) from the University of Houston at Clear Lake in Houston, Texas.
Dr. Azhar is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine and by the American College of Managed Care Medicine.
Dr. Azhar’s interests are in family medicine, ophthalmology and residency training. He has conducted funded research on diabetes and other conditions, and has served as sub-investigator on several clinical trials. He currently sees patients at the Family Medicine Clinic in Dickinson and also sees diabetic ophthalmology patients at the Family Medicine Clinic, Island East on Galveston Island.
