Barbara L. Thompson, MD
Professor
Dr. Thompson joined UTMB’s Department of Family Medicine in 1972. Dr. Thompson currently serves as Professor in the Department of Family Medicine after stepping down as Department Chair in October 2021, a position she held
since 1998.
Dr. Thompson earned a Bachelor of Arts from the University of Texas
at Austin and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Texas Medical
Branch at Galveston. She completed an internship with St. Vincent’s
Hospital in New York, New York, and a residency with the UTMB Health
Family Medicine Residency Program. Dr. Thompson was a member of the
first class of residents in this program.
Dr. Thompson is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine
with a Certificate of Added Qualifications in geriatrics. She has
selected as a "Texas Super Doc" by Texas Monthly magazine from
2011 to 2015. She was named one of Best Doctors'® "Best Doctors in
America" in 2009, 2010, 2011, and 2012. Dr. Thompson serves as the
clinician lead for the Primary Care Medical Home designation by NCQA for
all of the family medicine clinics and sees patients at the Family
Medicine Clinic - Island West.
Over her career, Dr. Thompson has held many leadership positions and
had many honors bestowed upon her. She has served as president of the
Association of Departments of Family Medicine, Emeritus Scholar and former Chair of the UTMB Health
John P. McGovern Academy of Oslerian Medicine, president of the
Galveston County Medical Society, and held other positions too numerous
to list.
Dr. Thompson’s interests include medical student education, resident education and medical history and ethics.
