A Personal Note from Dr. De La Cruz

I was born and raised in the Rio Grande Valley which is located in south Texas. I studied Biology and minored in Chemistry at the University of Texas-Pan American in Edinburg, TX. This University has recently had a name change and is now known as the University of Texas Rio Grande Valley. I then studied medicine here at the University of Texas Medical Branch in Galveston and have enjoyed living on Galveston Island.

During medical school, I had exposure to different specialties and enjoyed all my experiences on the different clerkship rotations. This strengthened my original interest in becoming a Family Medicine Physician. As a student I did multiple rotations through the Family Medicine department and was involved in the Family Medicine Interest Group. I was able to work with several of the Family Medicine faculty and residents during my medical school training. Although I plan to return to the Rio Grande Valley I decided to stay and complete my residency training here at UTMB.

I chose the Family Medicine Program at UTMB because of its history, reputation, and most significantly because of my first hand exposure to the program as a medical student. I knew that it could offer the components that interest me such as integrative, behavioral, rural, and geriatric medicine.

Some of my hobbies and interests include camping, hiking, archery, fishing, kayaking/canoeing, racquetball, and table tennis.
