Hospital Facilities

Residents on our inpatient rotations care for patients on the Family Medicine Inpatient Service at John Sealy Hospital. John Sealy Hospital serves as the hub of the UTMB Health System inpatient care complex in Galveston, and includes single patient rooms and specialized intensive care units.

Nearby inpatient facilities John Sealy Annex, Children’s Hospital, Texas Department of Criminal Justice Hospital, and the Shriner’s Hospital for Children. Residents will also have the opportunity to work in the university’s nationally recognized Level I Trauma Center, one of only three Level I Trauma Centers in the Houston/Galveston region. Patients in the UTMB Health System hospital complex benefit from a variety of world-class facilities, including such facilities as the Texas Transplant Center and the Blocker Burn Unit.

The University of Texas Medical Branch is a member of the 49-institution Texas Medical Center.

Jennie Sealy Hospital

Our Future

On the horizon at UTMB Health is the opening of the new Jennie Sealy Hospital. This 13-floor facility is designed to be a state-of-the-art facility to complement John Sealy Hospital.

The hospital will contain nealy 250 hospital rooms, representing one of the state's leading patient care resources. It will also contain 20 state-of-the-art operating suites, including dedicated surgical space for neurosurgery, organ transplantation and orthopedic surgery, and a 54-bed intensive care unit. Elevated walkways will connect the hospital both to the university’s existing John Sealy Hospital.

Construction of this new hospital began in the fall of 2011 and is expected to be complete in early 2016. For more information about this project, please take one of the many virtual tours of the hospital.
