Welcome to the Department of Family Medicine

The Department of Family Medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston is led by its chair of more than a decade, Dr. Barbara L. Thompson. The department was founded as an independent department in 1971, but existed prior to that as a division of the Department of Preventive Medicine and Community Health.

Our faculty provide medical care to Galveston County residents through its three clinics, located on the UTMB Galveston campus, on the western end of Galveston Island, and in Dickinson, Texas, and through its inpatient service at John Sealy Hospital in Galveston, Texas. Medical Student Education Program

Family Medicine offers courses for undergraduate medical students throughout all four years of the medical curriculum.   • Dr. Jerry Kruse to Present Grand Rounds on June 6

    May 17, 2013
    The UTMB Health Department of Family Medicine is pleased to announce that Jerry E. Kruse, MD, MSPH will be presenting a Family Medicine Grand Rounds on June 6, 2013. Dr. Kruse is CEO of Southern Illinois University Healthcare (SIU HealthCare) and is President of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM).

  • Family Medicine Clinic - Dickinson Open House

    On May 8th, 2013 the Family Medicine Clinic in Dickinson hosted an Open House to show off their new clinic space to the League City, Dickinson and UTMB Health community. The event was well-attended and the physicians, nurses and staff were there to offer tours and share all the wonderful work they do.
