Residency Program

Qualifications

All graduates of three-year family practice residencies are eligible to apply. Board certification is desired, but not required. Fellows must possess or be eligible for a Texas medical license.

Description

Fellows will spend 12 months living and working in a rural Texas community under the supervision of an adjunct clinical faculty member with an established practice in that community.

Direct supervision will be provided by clinical faculty at the Fellowship site. In addition, Department of Family Medicine faculty will make site visits at least quarterly. Under the supervision of department faculty, fellows are required to conduct a research project and to provide teaching for UTMB Family Medicine residents.

Evaluation

Evaluation is an essential part of the Rural Family Practice Fellowship. The evaluation process is divided into three categories:

  • evaluation of the fellow;
  • evaluation of the Fellowship; and
  • evaluation of the Fellowship faculty.

Thus, evaluation is viewed not only as an assessment of the fellow's learning and development, but also as a means of continuously improving and adding value to the Fellowship itself. Specific evaluation methods include:

  1. Supervising Physician's written evaluation of the fellow's clinical skills.
  2. Documentation of minimum number of procedures:
    • BTL (5)
    • D & C (5)
    • C/S (>20 deliveries)
    • Forceps/Vacuum (>20 deliveries)
    • Normal Vaginal Delivery (40)
  3. Completion and presentation of research project; submission for publication.
  4. Written evaluation of fellow's lectures by residents and faculty.
  5. Log of community outreach activities.
  6. Fellow's evaluation of the Supervising Physician, participating faculty and quality of the educational experience.
