Residency Program

Rural Training Track

The University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston (UTMB) serves Texas in the state’s mission of providing for the health care needs of its citizens. A critical element in UTMB’s support of this mission is the preparation of primary care physicians to serve citizens of the state who live in rural and medically underserved areas.

Rotations in Rural Family Medicine are offered by the UTMB Department of Family Medicine in an effort to increase the number of family physicians choosing to practice in underserved rural areas of Texas, and to provide knowledge and skills needed to provide high quality care in these settings.

Challenge to Society

  • 77% of Texas counties are rural (196/254)
  • 72 Texas counties (28%) have two or fewer physicians
