International Health at UTMB

Interested in global health, learning from other cultures and medical models, or providing care to people in resource-poor areas? Is volunteering or working for humanitarian or medical mission organizations in your future?

Want to improve your medical Spanish?

These are just a few of the reasons residents choose to participate in international medical electives during their training.

The Department of Family Medicine at UTMB houses the Center for Training in International Health. Through this center and our faculty, opportunities to participate in electives in developing countries around the world are available to 2 nd and 3 rd year residents.

The department has a long standing relationship with a rural primary care clinic in Nicaragua; faculty, students, and residents travel there for 2-3 weeks every June to provide services, in conjunction with a course entitled “Primary Health Care in Developing Countries”. (See http://ctih@utmb.edu/Nicaragua for more information). Residents can also do electives there at other times of the year, or may elect to develop their own elective in other sites around the world.

The center staff is here to help residents in the planning and successful completion of these electives, which are typically done as 1 month blocks during the 2 nd or 3 rd year.

Medical Spanish immersion courses are also available in several countries in Central and South America; these courses are frequently combined with clinical tropical medicine or community health programs, and provide an excellent opportunity to learn, or improve, language skills while living in a different culture.
