American Medical Association Curriculum

The curriculum in the Family Medicine Residency Program is shaped by several sources, including requirements of the Accreditation Council for Graduate Medical Education (ACGME), the American College of Osteopathic Family Physicians (ACOFP), the American Board of Family Practice (ABFP), and the program review committee utilizing information gained through the evaluation process. The program will maintain compliance with applicable accrediting agencies, but recognizes that such agencies generally specify only minimum standards, whereas our committee strives to achieve excellence.

At the present time, we have NO required out-of-area rotations. The following rotations occur at nearby community hospitals or community clinics: Surgery I, Surgery II, Outpatient Pediatrics I, Outpatient Pediatrics II, Pediatric Inpatient, Ortho I and Ortho II.

Residents are allowed two away electives in PGY2 and two away electives in PGY3. Some residents choose to do electives away from Galveston and some choose to do all their electives in the area.
