Selective

Students will be immersed in a Hispanic community at Brownsville,
Texas with clinic time at the Frontera de Salud Clinic in Cameron Park. Student
clinic experiences will emphasize hypertension, hyperlipidemia, cardiovascular
disease, diabetes and its complications, and mental illness. Students will also
become acquainted with community-based health education and promotion programs
and with ancillary services such as nurse-educators, social workers, and mental

Texas. The student will participate in activities in which the preceptor is
involved including office practice, hospitalized patients, nursing home care,

open to all senior students and junior students who have successfully completed

medical/societal problems disproportionately burden medically underserved
populations. The constructs of narrative medicine will be introduced and used to
guide personal, self- reflective writing assignments which will be based in part
on students’ own experiences with patients, beginning with POM 1 and continuing
