Dr. Julie McKee to speak at the 2016 Celebrating Women Conference

UTMB Health's Dr. Julie McKee, Associate Professor of Family Medicine and Assistant Dean for Student Affairs will be speaking at the 2016 Celebrating Women - Mind | Body | Spirit 9th Annual Conference, hosted by the Galveston Chamber of Commerce on April 14, 2016. Dr. McKee will be talking about "Living from the Heart."
mckee_womensconferenceUTMB Health's Dr. Julie McKee, Associate Professor of Family Medicine and Assistant Dean for Student Affairs will be speaking at the 2016 Celebrating Women - Mind  |  Body  | Spirit 9th Annual Conference, hosted by the Galveston Chamber of Commerce on April 14, 2016.  Dr. McKee will be talking about "Living from the Heart."  

This day is packed full of motivational speakers, shopping and bonding.  This year's featured speaker is Gretchen Ruben, A New or Times bestselling author and top-ranked podcaster.  Also highlighted for the day is cosmetic company owner and "Cute in Carpool" makeup series creator Jentry Kelley.  There are many other great speakers for a day packed of fun hosted by KHOU TV anchor, Mia Gradney.  Also joining Dr. McKee for topics on stage are fellow UTMB colleagues Dr. Zehra Jaffery, Director of Women's Heart Health and Sukwan Jolley from the UTMB Center for Obesity and Metabolic Surgery.

    Karen Welch, MD, the 2015-2016 UTMB Health Integrative and Behavioral Medicine Fellow, published "Pain management groups: remedy by the dozens" in the April 2016 issue of the Houston Medical Journal.

    Dr. Welch's article can be found on the journal's website, http://www.mjhnews.com, or in volume 12, issue 12 of the printed journal.

  • Nutritional Medicine Competencies Article Published

    The Department of Family Medicine is pleased to announce that Victor Sierpina, MD, Karen Welch, MD, and Julie McKee, MD published "What competencies should medical students attain in nutritional medicine?" in the March/April issue of Explore. The article examines the gap between the current state of nutrition education in medical school curricula and the dietary knowledge needed for comprehensive patient care, and proposes a new set of competencies that medical students should attain.

    The article was co-written with a team of educators, researchers, and students that includes Stephen Devries, MD, David Esinberg, MD, Lyuba Levine, MD, MMsci, Mauli Dalal, BS, Paul Mendoza, BBA, AAS, Jean Gutierrez, PhD, RD, Shay Robertson, MS, RD, LD, and Drusilla Rosales, MS, RD, CLEC.

  • McKee presents at Celebrating Women Conference

    Julie McKee, MD presented "Living from the Heart" at the 2016 Celebrating Women: Mind, Body, Spirit conference on April 14. The conference is presented annually by the Galveston Regional Chamber of Commerce in partnership with UTMB Health, and is attended by more than 800 women.
  • 2016-2017 Fellow Selected

    The Department of Family Medicine is pleased to announce that Richard Slater, III, MD has been selected as the 2016-2017 Integrative and Behavioral Medicine Fellow. Dr. Slater will join the department in July 2016.

    Dr. Slater is a 2013 graduate of the University of Texas Health Science Center in San Antonio's School of Medicine, and a 2008 graduate of the chemical engineering program at the University of Texas at Austin. He is currently completing his training with the Memorial Hermann Family Medicine Residency Program in Houston, Texas, and is working towards a Master's in Public Health at the University of Texas School of Public Health.
