Residency Program

Behavioral Medicine Fellowship

The Department of Family Medicine at the University of Texas Medical Branch at Galveston began a two-year fellowship in Family Systems Medicine in September of 2000. The Fellowship is geared for physicians seeking a career in academic family medicine; however, the curriculum is also applicable to physicians' practice needs. The Fellowship prepares one to apply biopsychosocial and collaborative practice principles to all aspects of family practice. Clinical, didactic, research and independent study programs will prepare the fellow to conduct medical family therapy, teach family systems medicine and to conduct clinical and educational research in biopsychosocially oriented medicine.

The fellow receives training and supervision in the following areas: general behavioral medicine techniques applicable in a primary care medical practice; individual, marital and family therapy; curriculum development, teaching skills, research design and biostatistics, and health and mental health collaboration. The fellow is expected to conduct three half days a week of medical psychotherapy, maintain a medical practice for two half days, teach family medicine residents, and complete a relevant research project which will be presented at a national conference as well as be published in a peer reviewed journal.

A one year curriculum may also be developed. The fellowships are available depending on availability of funding.
