FMIG Hosts 2017 Primary Care Procedures Workshop

Oct 26, 2017
The UTMB Health Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG), along with the Department of Family Medicine, hosted the 7th Annual Primary Care Procedures at the Primary Care Pavilion (PCP2) Thursday evening, October 12th from 5:30 until 8:30pm. Over 70 medical students, ranging from 1st years to 4th years, gathered to experience procedures family physicians perform in their daily practice. This hands-on workshop allowed medical students to learn and practice many procedures, including splinting & casting, endometrial biopsies, dermatology procedures, child birth, circumcision, suturing and knot tying, joint injections, and colposcopies.

A team from the Texas Academy of Family Physician (TAFP), including a film crew, attended to observe and document our workshop as an example for other family medicine programs in the state to follow.

The evening also included a dinner and drawings for prizes, complete with a grand prize of an iPad Mini.

This annual event is coordinated by the Family Medicine Interest Group, which is advised Dr. Jennifer Raley, a faculty member in the Department of Family Medicine. If you didn't get to experience this year's workshop, look out for one of FMIG's other workshops in the spring or the next Primary Care Procedures workshop next October.
