  • Helping Hands (FMIG)

    Join the Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) as they hold their 2nd annual Helping Hands Event. For more information, please see the FMIG page on Facebook.

    The group will begin the day at 8 am at the Luke Society Medical Mission to the Homeless' open-air clinic, providing patient care and distributing hygiene packs. From there, the group will volenteer at the St. Vincent's House Free Clinic beginning at 10 am.

    Faculty and residents who are interested in volunteering should contact Julie McKee, MD. Students interested in participating should contact the FMIG through their Facebook page

    The Family Medicine Interest Group (FMIG) is pleased to announce its PCP at the PCP Lite, a primary care procedures workshop focusing on suturing skills and techniques, held in the Primary Care Pavilion. This year's PCP at the PCP Lite will take place on April 3, 2014 from 5:30pm to 7:30pm.

    Space at this free workshop is limited to only 30 students, and pre-registration is required.

    The UTMB Health John P. McGovern Academy of Oslerian Medicine, the UTMB Health Office of Student Life, as well as University Student Services' Counseling and Psychological Services, the Student Government Association (SGA), the UTMB Health student chapters of the American Medical Association and Texas Medical Association (AMA/TMA), the UTMB Students for Integrative Medicine (SIM), and Students Together for Service (STS) present the 3rd Annual Stress Less Week March 31 – April 6, 2014.

    Some events may be restricted to UTMB Health students only. Please contact the UTMB Health Office of Student Life for more information.

    The UTMB Health Department of Family Medicine is pleased to announce that Joshua Freeman, MD will be joining us for a Grand Rounds lecture on March 6, 2014.

    Dr. Freeman is the Alice M. Patterson, MD, and Harold L. Patterson, MD Professor and Chair of the Department of Family Medicine and Chief of Family Medicine at the University of Kansas Hospital, and is also Professor of Preventive Medicine and Public Health and of Health Policy and Management. He serves nationally as the Secretary-Treasurer of the Society of Teachers of Family Medicine (STFM), and as a member of the Board of Trustees of Roosevelt University in Chicago. He is Assistant Editor of the journal Family Medicine, is on the Board of Southwest Boulevard Family Care, and has previously served as Treasurer of the Association of Departments of Family Medicine (ADFM), and on the Boards of the REACH Healthcare Foundation and Physicians for Reproductive Health and Choice. He is co-faculty advisor for the JayDoc Student-run Free Clinic, and for the Community Leadership track longitudinal elective. He served as Chair of the Steering Committee for Curricular Change (2003-05), and is a charter member of the School of Medicine's Academy of Medical Educators.
     
    Dr. Freeman was a Fulbright Scholar in São Paulo, Brazil in 2003, and consults there frequently on establishment of family medicine in that country. In 2007-08, Dr. Freeman completed the joint American Council on Education fellowship to train leaders in higher education and the STFM Foundation Bishop Fellowship. His host institution was the University of New Mexico, where his mentor was Paul Roth, MD, Dean of the Medical School and Executive Vice President for Health Sciences. He received the STFM's highest honor, the Recognition Award, in 2006.
     
    Dr. Freeman is a graduate of the Loyola-Stritch School of Medicine in Chicago, and completed his Family Medicine residency at Cook County Hospital, and a Faculty Development Fellowship and General Preventive Medicine residency at the University of Arizona. Prior to coming to KUMC in 2002, he previously served as Residency Program Director and Interim Chair of the Department of Family and Community Medicine at the University of Texas Health Science Center at San Antonio, and at Cook County Hospital in Chicago where he was also on the faculty of the University of Illinois Schools of Medicine and Public Health. His research interests include medical education, faculty development and curricular innovation, and health care for underserved populations.

    The UTMB Health Department of Family Medicine is pleased to present David P. Rakel, MD as he gives a Grand Rounds lecture entitled "The Clinician Effect: How You Trump Pills".

    Dr. Rakel is currently an associate professor in the Department of Family Medicine at the University of Wisconsin (UW) School of Medicine and Public Health. He is also the founder and director of its Integrative Medicine Program. Dr. Rakel is editor of one of the premier texts in this field, Integrative Medicine, now in its third edition. He is also the co-editor of the Textbook of Family Medicine and editor-in-chief of Primary Care Practice Update

    Dr. Rakel has received NIH funding to study the "clinicial effect" and to incorporate healing modalities into medical school curricula. His team was awarded a contract by the Veteran's Health Administration to educate VA clinicians across the country toward a "Personalized, Proactive, and Patient-Driven" cultural shift in health care delivery. He enjoys exploring complex systems and developing insight into how each can find a path towards health. 

    Dr. Rakel serves as one of 5 mentors for the UW School of Medicine and Public Health student body.  He has been awarded a number of teaching awards including the Baldwin E. Lloyd clinical teacher award, the UW Department of Family Medicine faculty excellence award, the Marc Hansen lecture award and the resident teacher-of-the-year award. 

    Dr. Rakel started his career near the Teton Mountains in Driggs, Idaho, where he was in rural private practice for five years before completing a two-year residential fellowship in integrative medicine at the University of Arizona Health Sciences Center. He is board-certified in family and integrative medicine, has a certificate of added qualification in sports medicine, and is certified in interactive guided imagery.

    This educational forum is supported by the Marcel and Josephine Patterson Memorial Lectureship in Family Medicine, and the Jesse B. Heath Lectureship in Family Medicine.
