Our university community is deeply saddened by the loss of Dr. Jamal Islam, a faculty member in the Department of Family Medicine, who passed away in December of 2023.

Dr. Islam was a loved and respected part of the Family Medicine team. Most recently, he served as Clinical Professor of Family Medicine and Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program. He held the John P. McGovern Centennial Chair in Family Medicine.

Dr. Islam returned to the UTMB Health Department of Family Medicine in February of 2015. He is currently a Clinical Professor of Family Medicine and holds the John P. McGovern Centennial Chair in Family Medicine. Dr. Islam serves as Director of the UTMB Health Family Medicine Residency Program.

Dr. Islam returned to UTMB Health after serving as an Associate Professor and Research Director for the Department of Family and Community Medicine at Texas Tech University in Odessa, Texas. Prior to his position at Texas Tech, Dr. Islam worked as a faculty member in UTMB Health’s Department of Family Medicine for 10 years. 

Dr. Islam earned his Doctorate of Medicine from University of Dhaka in Bangladesh and a Master of Science in epidemiology from the University of Texas at Houston. He then completed a family medicine residency at State University of New York Health Sciences Center in Brooklyn.

During his career, Dr. Islam has been involved in over twenty-five clinical research projects and published 13 articles. In addition, Dr. Islam has over 25 state, national, and international poster presentations to his credit.

Dr Islam is certified by the American Board of Family Medicine. He is a member of the American Academy of Family Physicians, Texas Academy of Family Physicians, and Society of Teachers of Family Medicine.

Dr. Islam’s clinical interests are in serving the Asian and Hispanic populations with an emphasis on treating those with diabetes, cardiovascular disease and obesity. Dr. Islam is fluent in Spanish, Urdu, Hindi and Bengali.
