Dr. Shepherd joined the faculty of UTMB’s Department of Family Medicine in 1995. She is a Professor, Family Medicine and holds the Evalyn Matheson Phillips and Claurice M. Phillips, MD Distinguished Professorship in Family Medicine. Dr. Shepherd currently serves as the department's Vice Chair for Clinical Affairs.

Dr. Shepherd earned a Bachelor of Arts from Texas Tech University and a Doctor of Medicine from the University of Texas Medical Branch. She then completed a residency with the UTMB Health Family Medicine Residency Program.

Dr. Shepherd is board certified in Family Medicine by the American Board of Family Medicine. She was been named one of Best Doctors'® "Best Doctors in America" in 2009, 2010, 2011, 2012, and 2013. She was voted best physician as part of the Galveston.com Best of Galveston Awards in 2014, and voted second-best in 2015.

Prior to joining the faculty at UTMB, Dr. Shepherd was in private practice in Galveston, Texas. She has held several leadership roles at UTMB Health, including Director of the Family Medicine Residency Program and Director of the Gulf Health Care Center Nursing Home Service. She instrumental in starting the Ball High School Teen Prenatal Clinic.

Dr. Shepherd has also conducted funded research on osteoporosis, adolescent health, and residency curriculum development. Her primary clinical and research interests are in primary prevention, and clinical interventions for osteoporosis.
